In other words, it is not a “teachable-teacher” relationship. However, we do offer suggestions and information in response to client requests.
We are willing to offer suggestions and information that will be useful to the client. In such cases, it is important to note that the suggestions and information provided should not be directed at or forced upon the client. It is up to the client to decide whether or not to accept and implement the suggestions and information.

Therefore, when a coach offers a suggestion or information to a client, the coach should ask the client, “May I make a suggestion?
“May I make one suggestion?”
“May I give you some information that I have?”
It is advisable to ask the client for permission before making a suggestion or providing information.

The role of the coach is to help the client achieve the goal of performance improvement. That goal may require technical skills. It is natural that the client may require skills that the client does not have at the time.
In the extreme, we are willing to do whatever it takes to help the client achieve his or her goals. There are many variations in how we work with our clients, and we must make the most effective choices at any given time.

Then,
“Isn’t that the same as teaching?”
“Does that mean I can teach?”
The question might be asked…

In the case of teaching, the relationship between the student and the teacher is based on the premise that the student is “taught” and the teacher “teaches” the student. In other words, a teacher who does not teach is not valued.
Coaching is different. It does not teach the client, but rather asks the client to think for himself or herself. The essential implication of this is to encourage the client’s own “awareness” and support his/her growth.

It is also important to show a willingness to provide support in a variety of ways, not only during the session, but also outside of session time. Clients will feel an even stronger sense of trust when they see a coach who is serious about helping them achieve their goals.

Coaching is different from teaching.
