Behind every emotion and action, Adler pointed out, is the presence of a purpose. That purpose is different for each individual. So what is the basis on which these differences are formed? It is values.
For coaching to truly work, it is important for the client to be able to understand how these values were formed. The coach encourages awareness through a variety of approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask them to recall their past selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The client is asked to recall the most vivid or brightest moments in his or her life to date, moments of excitement and joy.
(Sample question.)
What was happening there?
Who was there and what were they doing?
Why did those feelings arise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask them to reflect on their choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask them to recall a time when they had to make a major decision, a turning point in their lives, and what choice did they make at that time? What choices did you make at that time, and if you did not make a decision, why? What choices did you make at that time?
(Sample question.)
When you look back on that choice in hindsight, what satisfied you that it was a really good choice?
What is the one factor that, in retrospect, still lingers in your mind that you would have preferred to have made a different choice, i.e., the one thing that had to be fulfilled?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask them to recall a time when they felt angry, frustrated or uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was happening there?
Who was there and what were they doing?
What values were respected at that time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask them to think about the indispensable things in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you feel is essential for you to live a fulfilling life, other than the essentials such as food, clothing, and shelter?
