Frames are usually acquired or erased through various life experiences, and one of the most important of these life experiences is conversation, or communication, with others.

Through this process, certain frames are shared and accepted as self-evident by many people living in that society and time period. This is what is called “common sense” or “what is natural”.

If people are able to adapt themselves to these frames and behave naturally within them, they will not manifest as a problem, but the reality is that social constraints unknowingly bind individual behavior.
Many people are conservative, hearing only what they want to hear and seeing only what they want to see. As a result, the person’s natural potential for growth is being put on the brakes.

Reframing is the process of taking things out of one framework (frame) and putting them in a different one. Professional coaches use Reframing skills to help clients become aware of the way they perceive things that they have assumed and are holding themselves back from.

This is because the frame they already hold is actually a one-sided view, and the “truth” is that there are other multifaceted perspectives.

For example, reframe the frame, “The child became rebellious because of the mother’s nagging,” as “The mother nagged because the child was rebellious”.

Or, the frame, “The wife has to do all the housework because the husband does nothing,” is reframed as, “The husband does nothing because the wife does everything”.

Embracing this way of thinking allows us to replace cause and effect, or victim and perpetrator, etc.

Each of us lives with a frame (or framework) of values, opinions, and thoughts.
