Coaching “feedback” is the act of communicating the words and actions of others from an objective, external perspective to promote self-understanding and awareness in the other person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally a Keyword in Systems Engineering<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The English word “feedback” originally originated as a key word in systems engineering, meaning “to reflect the result to the cause and adjust the whole. Today, the term is widely used to describe communication between people, and is also positioned as an important skill in coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not see ourselves as well as we think we do. Therefore, a professional coach acts as a ‘mirror’ for the other person and conveys what he\/she sees, hears, and feels\u201d. Not only the positive, but also the negative is properly communicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coach communicates what he or she feels in a neutral way. Positive feedback to the client is encouraging. Also, by communicating what the client does not want to hear, without including the discernment, it is an important first step for the client to gain “true awareness”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the most important and prerequisite for this to happen is that a sense of trust is fostered between the coach and the client, and that the environment is one in which rapport can be felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the “purpose” of feedback and its “significance” in coaching?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of the skill of “feedback” is to “encourage client awareness\u201d. The client’s feelings and thoughts are sensed and communicated. Even if they are at odds with the client’s awareness, we communicate them openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coach is truly significant when he or she is able to honestly communicate what the client does not see and is not willing to see, and deliver the words in a way that they resonate in the client’s heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the client feels “approved” and “listened to” by the coach and receives heartfelt “questions,” the client is receptive to the coach.
