This may have both advantages and disadvantages for the future recognition and expansion of coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantage of coaching is that it is &#8220;highly flexible. Academia, science, basically requires rigor. There are categories, clear definitions within those categories, and shared understandings.<br>Coaching, on the other hand, is not authoritatively defined as a science, and various companies and institutions have developed their own curricula and certifications. This makes the &#8220;level of qualified coaching professionals varied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coaching as a business emerged in the U.S. in the 1990s, when Thomas Leonard founded Coach U in 1992, demonstrating to the world that coaching could be a business.
